Book 1 of Military Men of Lexington
Spin off from her Country Road series
Taylor Cain was a golden boy in high school, yet instead of taking the full ride to college he enlists with his best friends–one (Henry Gilbert) he remains friends with throughout their military career. Henry lives through multiple deployments only for tragedy to occur at home. Taylor being the loyal best friend is there for Henry’s pregnant wife, Scarlett. The more Taylor is there for Scarlett the more guilty he feels. He feels numerous emotions about his slow burning relationship with Scarlett including guilt.
Scarlett has kept a secret from everyone including their closest friends, Connor, Grant, and Taylor–Henry and her were divorcing. The day of the tragedy, she argued with her husband. Guilt is an overwhelming emotion for the new widow along with what ifs. So many what ifs. She’s scared. This precious baby is growing inside her but she’s alone. Connor and Grant will be there for her but who would hold her hand in the delivery room? The only person she truly trusts is her husband’s best friend. Again guilt keeps her from going after what she truly wants. She shouldn’t be thinking about Taylor the way she is. She shouldn’t rely on him or trust him as she does. She’s tired of everyone looking at her with pity and sympathy in their eyes.
This book was emotional on so many levels. Both characters are mourning and struggling to find their place in the world after such a tragedy. Johnston conveyed the characters to perfection. My heart broke when Scarlett and Taylor’s did. I felt everything they did. The perfect opening book for a new series. Loved having a glimpse of Jameson and Ashton!! While Promise Her has a completely different feel than Johnston’s Country Road series….it is definitely worth reading.

No one knows the secret I’ve buried inside.
When the unimaginable happens, the past doesn’t matter. Only the future. Only this baby.
The grief and guilt are overwhelming, especially when I find comfort in my late husband’s best friend. Taylor Cain isn’t known for letting others in, but he’s here for me in a way no one else is.
Even though I’m playing with fire, his arms are the only place I feel safe.
Life can change in the blink of an eye.
When I lose my best friend, I bury my own grief to be there for his pregnant widow.
Somehow between vowing to protect Scarlett Gilbert and her baby to holding her in my arms, I developed feelings for her. Feelings I question are within my right. Having her in my life makes me feel alive for the first time.
Between her commitment to his memory and respect for my best friend, we fear judgment for the love we share.
Some say promises are made to be broken, but when I promise her my heart, I intend to keep it.
