Excerpt: Ms. Baker by Lea Coll

Jack leaned closer to me, his elbows resting on the table. “I need to talk to him.”

“Who?” I looked around in case he meant someone else, but seeing no one, I asked, “Justin?”

His face determined, he got up from his chair, started walking toward the kitchen door, and said over his shoulder, “Yeah, I don’t like how he treats you.”

I shook my head and shot out of my chair. “No, Jack. No.” I grabbed his arm to stop him, his muscles tense under my fingers. “Look, Jack. I appreciate everything you did for me in high school, but I’m not that girl anymore. I don’t need you fighting my battles for me.” I held my hand up. “I’ve got this.”

“Do you? What would you have done if I hadn’t walked in?” Jack asked.

“I was two seconds from kneeing him in the junk.”

He raised his brows and his lips twitched. “Really?”

“Yes. I’m telling you I’ve got this.” I sounded a lot more confident than I felt, but Jack relaxed and moved back to his seat.

“For the record, I don’t mind fighting your battles for you.”
